Geography

St Lucia is a volcanic tropical island of steep mountains, reaching 950m. in altitude, and of deep ravines. The vegetation varies from extreme xeric coastal savanna with abundant cacti, through submontane and montane rain forest, to cloud montane and “elfin” forest. There are also small areas of riverine and mangrove swamps.  The result is a complex vegetation, belying its meager 616 square kilometers.
